Duties & Responsibilities: Position Overview: Sybase DBA»s primary responsibility is to keep our Sybase instance in working condition - plan and implement database deployment to new hardware, upgrades, current support. Second main responsibility is to serve as Sybase expert for global Alice team, being integral member of development team. Role Description: Currently our Sybase instance contains 5 databases for 2 applications. It is deployed on AIX and we are planning to migrate to Solaris. This position is responsible for following: • Planning and implementing Sybase deployment to new hardware, • Planning and implementing Sybase tuning according to hardware upgrades, applications» demand change, data volumes change, etc. • Improve Sybase monitoring process, which may include writing monitoring scripts, etc. • Act as 3rd level support for Sybase-related issues (incl. overnight support according to shift schedule), • Serve as Sybase expert for development team, solving complicated Sybase-related issues, discussing & implementing software optimizations, etc. • Do development of database-related tasks in our application system; need to understand our application on developer»s level, • Monitor Sybase patches releases, new Sybase version releases; evaluate reward/risk of upgrade, test compatibility of our application with new version, spread knowledge of new features inside dev team, • Act as intermediary between our team and Sybase support, keeping track of issues raised with Sybase support, • Support migration to Solaris.
Experience / Requirements: Experience/Background: • 5+ years experience as Sybase DBA (installing, upgrading, administering Sybase) is required, • Proven experience in diagnosing Sybase - related issues (performance, stability) is required, • UNIX background (Solaris is required, AIX is a strong plus, other UNIXes is a plus), • Past experience in financial organizations is preferred. Personal Characteristics: - Good communication skills, - Carefulness, - Team player, - Self-reliance (e.g. work without pushing, etc...), - Willingness and ability to learn our applications.
Qualifications: Sybase ASE 12.5 and/or 15.0 for UNIX: 5+ years total experience is required (2+ years with Sybase for Solaris required), Performance tuning for large data volumes on highly-loaded system, UNIX shell scripting skills required, Perl scripting skills are a plus, English level should be enough for both verbal and written communications, Strong analytical skills, Experience with AIX is a strong plus, C/C++ background (e.g. experience with Sybase C library) is a strong plus.
